The need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and tackle the climate crisis is urgent, and ClimateTech and CleanTech will be central to meeting climate commitments. There is a clear correlation between environmentally forward-thinking cities and the hubs for ClimateTech and CleanTech. Helsinki and Oslo rank highly, for example, thanks to investment in clean transport and a high use of renewable energy.

FinTech
This broad area of tech ranges from payment technologies, insurance tech to blockchain and cryptocurrency. New York and London, the two global leaders in financial services, top this list, while the finance hubs of Singapore, Tokyo and Chicago also score highly. Others, such as Miami, are bolstering their positions as financial centres by embracing finance technology. Emerging centres in this space include Cape Town, Nairobi and Lagos as the African market leapfrogs traditional banking.

Life Sciences & HealthTech
Artificial intelligence, machine learning and data-driven health solutions are accelerating medical development as tech companies enter the health sector. Boston tops this list, a higher education powerhouse and global life sciences hub. New York, Silicon Valley and San Francisco, benefiting from cross-pollination from a broad tech base, round off the top four, while Melbourne has seen significant growth and government support in the space.

This is about using technology to overcome significant scientific, engineering or technical challenges, and ranges from Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning to Nanotechnology to Big Data. Because Deep Tech ventures need to bring together multiple talents (including scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs) to be successful, this wide-ranging field is especially prevalent in the big tech centres.

MediaTech
Including video on demand, streaming, esports and gaming, and advertising, among others, this tech sector has transformed our leisure time. The traditional US east and west coast media hubs of New York and Los Angeles feature in the top three. The ‘technologisation’ of media is propelling cities such as Austin, Seattle and San Diego up the rankings. Chinese cities including Beijing and Shanghai also feature as China spearheads gaming, livestreaming and video sharing platforms.
